Verdugo Woodlands encompasses the area west of Verdugo Road, south of Oakmont Country Club, and north of Verdugo Park. It is nestled in a lush valley between the Verdugo Mountains on the west and the San Rafael Hills to the east. The Woodlands is named for and filled with a wonderful combination of trees including California Live Oak, Evergreen, Jacaranda, Sycamore, and Palm.
It has a rich Spanish, Mexican and American history dating from 1784. The oldest existing structure, the Catalina Verdugo Adobe, was constructed around 1860. A portion of the area was subdivided in 1919 as the Selvas de Verdugo, or “Verdugo’s woods.” Attracted by the canyon breezes, early Angelinos escaped downtown Los Angeles by establishing vacation retreats in the canyon. Indigenous trees such as sycamores and bays, as well as a sense of history, define the canyon neighborhood. Homes, apartments, and condominiums in a country setting surround Glendale’s Verdugo park and picnic grounds on Cañada Blvd. and the Verdugo Adobe on Bonita Drive. Locals refer to their neighborhood as “The Woodlands.”
There are about 1100 single-family homes in The Woodlands which has one and two story homes set on sizable lots. Since nearly all of Verdugo Woodlands was developed before the 1970′s, the area has thousands of beautiful mature trees and very few vacant lots. Home buyers should be aware of the local tree ordinance regarding the protected trees in Glendale and how that may impact their potential plans for a property in The Woodlands or anywhere else in Glendale.
There is an active Homeowers’s Association and the local elementary school Verdugo Woodlands Elementary is widely regarded as one of the best in the region.
